The UBC Killam Teaching Prize is awarded annually to faculty nominated by students, colleagues and alumni in recognition of excellence in teaching. Congratulations to all 23 recipients for 2021-22, especially to the two DMCBH members:
Dr. Michael Gordon, Zoology, Faculty of Science
Dr. Michael Gordon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Zoology and also a Graduate Program in Neuroscience faulty member. He has mentored and taught students at all levels, ranging from teaching undergraduate courses to supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in his lab. He believes in providing his students with diverse resources and technological tools that support a variety of learning styles. His main goal is to enhance his students’ understanding and knowledge of key concepts and skills in biology and neuroscience that will be useful beyond their time at UBC.
Dr. Kurt Haas, Cellular and Physiological Sciences, and Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Medicine
Dr. Kurt Haas is a Professor in the Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences and also a Graduate Program in Neuroscience faculty member. He has mentored and taught students at all levels, including providing internships for undergraduate students and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in his lab. In particular, he created the Indigenous Community Outreach Project, which provides opportunities for Indigenous undergraduate students to participate in summer research internships. He is also the director of the NeuroImaging and NeuroComputation Centre (NINC), which provides support to the research community, with advanced microscopy and imaging systems as well as high performance computing infrastructure.
