Dr. Galea’s laboratory is interested in how sex and stress hormones affect brain and behaviour across the lifespan. The main goal of her research is to improve brain health for women and men by examining the influence of sex and sex hormones on normal and diseased brain states such as depression and Alzheimer’s disease. In particular she studies sex and sex hormone differences on neuroplasticity in the hippocampus to influence stress resilience and learning and memory in adult and middle-aged males and females. She also examines the long and short term effects of pregnancy and mothering on brain health and disease risk.
